The Ghat is literally a series of steps, stairs that leads to a river, a lake or a pool- bating place. Many of these sites are defined as holy places and hold an important religious significance for Induist, they usually worship gods and goddesses and performing rituals “puja” as an offering to various deities. While performing these rituals the water assume an important symbolic significance as it is believed that water has spirituals cleansing power. Some of these places are also cremation sites “Shamshana Ghat” where dead bodies are brought to be burned on a pyre, belongings or photos of the deceased are also placed in the sacred water as a funerary act. Beside the religious aspect, the Ghats are places where ordinary activities like washing clothes, socializing, bathing are taking place. The Photos are taken at the Pushkar Lake and in Jaipur in the State of Rajastan in North India. Trough this series of photo we look at the environment of the Ghat by experiencing the site in terms of a public space where several activities related to socialization/gathering are taking place. A mix of people, animals and deities are gathering here, creating an unique atmosphere and providing interesting thoughts while thinking at the interrelationship within social environments and people. Like at the beach, at the lake or at the public swimming pool, also at the Ghat the water become a link of connection within the natural/urban environment and a place where people gather.
